In the bubble of K-pop, bigger is not always better

The trio Rainbow Pixie, from left, Kim Ji-sook-I, Oh Seung-a and Cho Hyun-young, is one of the newest sub-groups to emerge.

To keep up with the fast moving world of K-pop, it's no longer enough to follow your favorite boy or girl band. These days, fans have to keep track of an ever-changing array of smaller groups that come together almost as fast as they break apart.

These smaller groups are often formed from an already proven success, with bands like Super Junior and After School giving rise to newer and sometimes better versions of themselves before they are absorbed back into the original band or spun off again into another duo or trio.

Orchestrating this wave of constant combinations are the entertainment agencies who train and finance the bands until they turn out a profit.

By breaking down groups and repackaging them, the companies can spotlight individual members of K-pop super groups, which can consist of as many as 10 members or more. Members of the smaller groups are featured for more than just a few seconds each per song and the companies build a stronger fan base for the original group.

According to pop music critic Kim Jag-ga, pop groups need to constantly evolve in order to make a profit for the huge companies that train and finance the bands.

SM Entertainment was the first to try this strategy when it broke the 13-member boy band Super Junior into four smaller groups each with its own style and concept. Two years after the group's debut in 2005, the company introduced fans to Super Junior T, a six-member group known for trot music hits, Super Junior M, a seven-member group with two Chinese nationals and a hit album released in China and Japan, and Super Junior Happy, a sextet known for its jubilant tunes and the 2008 EP "Cooking?Cooking!" But the most successful group by far has been Super Junior-K.R.Y., a trio of balladeers comprising the three best vocalists in the group. Their album "Fly" from last year has topped charts and the group has toured Japan three times.

The success of these sub-groups has led other major bands to follow their lead, with some of the smaller groups attracting even more attention then the originals.

That was the case with Orange Caramel, a quartet featuring the four youngest members of the girl group After School. The group was formed in 2010 and got their first taste of fame with an EP they released that June. They won fans over with their doll-like appearance and cute performances and they've topped online music charts with songs such as "A-ing", and "Shanghai Romance".

One of the newest groups to emerge is Rainbow Pixie, which debuted with the song "Hoi Hoi" and consists of three members of the girl group Rainbow.

It's gimmick is colorful costuming and choreography with lots of waving magic wands.

In other cases, the sub-group directs fans back to the original group.

The duo that is Sistar 19 won fame for its fast songs and short skirts, quickly surpassing the popularity of the four-member group that gave it its name. In its original incarnation, Sistar was known for light and cheerful songs.

Sometimes, the new groups are formed with members from other bands from the same entertainment agency.

Cube Entertainment used this tactic to form Trouble Maker. The popular group was a duo consisting of Hyun-A from 4Minute and Jang Hyun-seung from Beast and its self-titled EP went to No. 1 on various music charts.

But in a reflection of how quickly these groups come together and fade away, Trouble Maker is already part of K-pop history.

Both Music and Art Are Vital to All-Rounder Lisa

Singer and musical actress Lisa is holding her second solo art exhibition. Lisa, who debuted as a singer in 2003, has always designed and drawn her own album jackets and says she draws as if she is writing a diary and finds drawing and painting therapeutic.

"I'm happy to have both music and art with me so that I can express my emotions. Both are channels to express myself. In this exhibition, I tried to show paintings that people easily appreciate and sympathize with".

She made her musical debut with "Bandits" in 2007, made her name by playing a starring role in the musical version of the mega-hit TV drama "Dae Jang Geum" (Jewel in the Palace) the year after. Recently she has won a starring role in a double cast for "Evita", for which she had to learn the tango and Latin dance.

Lisa also teaches aspiring musicians at Seoul Art College. How does she manage to do so many things at the same time? "Many people say I must be crazy to do all this. But I think I'm the type of person who does better when things get busy. I think music and art are essentially quite similar. It's just that the medium of expression is different".

Lisa majored in painting at Hongik University, which is renowned for the arts. When she is not working on a musical or album, she paints. "When I am busy with music, I get energized by painting in my spare time. On the other hand, when I mostly paint, I get energy from listening to music", she says.

Lisa spent much of her youth overseas as her father was a diplomat. She can speak English, German, Swedish and Polish, and is good at a variety of sports. Is there anything else she wants to learn? "I'm an ambitious person. I want to whatever I get a chance to do until the day I die. You only have one life".

What is her ultimate goal? "I've watched my dad's work as a diplomat since I was very young. Based on my experience, I'd love to be a cultural diplomat who can introduce Korean arts to a worldwide audience", she says.

LMFAO to bring 'party rock'

American duo LMFAO will perform at Olympic Hall in Bangi-dong, southeastern Seoul on April 7. / Courtesy of VU Entertainment

By Kwaak Je-yup

When K-pop fans were dancing to the moves of idol groups Big Bang and Girls' Generation last year, pop music lovers elsewhere were rocking to the addictive sounds of American duo LMFAO, DJs RedFoo and his nephew SkyBlu. As demonstrated by their appearance on the Super Bowl XLVI halftime show and in one of the commercials, they made one of the definitive albums of 2011.

And on April 7, local fans will get a chance to see the duo in action on the stage of Olympic Hall in Bangi-dong, southeastern Seoul.

That fan base includes 24-year-old movie star Jang Geun-seok, who introduced them to the local mainstream audience by mimicking their moves on a TV show. His reenactment of the signature moves, nicknamed "shuffle dance" here, caused a sensation; now at any given club on any night, one could easily see a group following the same routine.

The 36-year-old uncle and his 25-year-old nephew were first signed to the Interscope Records in 2008 and scored an international breakthrough three years later, when they released the single "Party Rock Anthem" from the first album, "Sorry for Party Rocking". The electro pop sound, which the group calls "party rock", won fans around the world at an astounding speed, partially thanks to the power of YouTube and their carefree, pull-out-all-the-stops music videos.

Attendees can expect to hear their subsequent hits "Champagne Showers", "Sexy and I Know It", as well as earlier tracks like "I'm in Miami Trick". The Grammy-nominated act is currently on the North American leg of its tour, moving on to Europe by mid-month before getting to Asia at the end of March.

Adding to their already-high level relevance, in 2010 RedFoo was also involved in an in-flight altercation with the current U.S. Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney during the Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver.

It is also notable that the duo is family of the founder of the legendary Motown Records, Berry Gordy. RedFoo is his son and SkyBlu is his grandson.

The first round of tickets will be available on Thursday at 2 p.m. at ticket.interpark.com. The second round of selling begins on the 20th. Standing room tickets cost from 88,000 to 99,000 won and assigned seats cost from 88,000 to 121,000 won.

Album review

Jay Park - 'New Breed' (UNIVERSAL MUSIC)

Why we recommend it: Though a few tracks offer something new, for the most part, the album is recommended for Jay Park's fans.

Recommended track: "Clap"

One and a half stars out of four

Jay Park, the former member of a popular boy band 2PM, has released his first full-length album, "New Breed". The 15-track CD includes five songs from a mini album "New Breed Part 1" put out in December 2011.

Undoubtedly, Park has the smooth moves and crooning voice. However, his vocal range is limited and requires savvy producing to make listening to multiple tracks enjoyable.

Unfortunately, half of the numbers on "New Breed" are indistinguishable from one another. The long list of featured artists – Dynamic Duo, Tiger J.K., Dok2, and so on– offers a break from Park's monotone voice.

The title track "Know Your Name" is a dance song that highlights the flatness of Park's vocals. The cliche lines such as "even when the night ends, lets continue this" do not help. Often the lyrics sounds awkwardly manipulated to fit the flow.

"I Love You" got much publicity as a song produced by Rob Knox of The Y, an R&B/pop production group consisting of Justin Timberlake, James Fauntleroy and Knox. The electronic beat is catchy, but Park's vocal sounds especially nasally on the track.

Cleary Park wants to shed his K-pop star history and announce himself as a tough artist, seen in his "Turn Off Your Phone". Starting with "You are dolled up but I am sorry because all of that will be coming off", Park goes on to say more scandalous things (for Korean mainstream singers). It sounds no different from "Stars", one of the songs from the mini album; just the romantic lyrics replaced with scandalous ones. More importantly, the lady's man repertoire coupled with Park's boyish voice produces a high pitch Trey Songz-wannabe.

Park fairs better on the up-tempo and grungy tracks "Enjoy The Show", "Clap" and "Up And Down", which carry the hostile and arrogant attitude of hip-hop.

Especially, "Clap" which features the rock star couple Tiger J.K. and Yoon Mi-rae has the beat and the steam that make it notably edgy. These are songs that Park can use to reinforce his new image as an independent artist as opposed to a member of a kitschy boy band.

―NOH HYUN-GI

Se7en - 'New Mini Album' (KMP HOLDINGS)

The build-up to this new six-track mini album was extremely effective, albeit brief. The YouTube teaser for the single "When I Can't Sing" showed the artist with the track's producer Park Jin-young performing a snippet of the song.

The unprecedented collaboration between Se7en's agency YG Entertainment and Park's own JYP Entertainment was enough to catch the tabloid headlines and take the blogosphere by storm.

The results are certainly impressive, showcasing the singer's ripening talent through back-to-basics R&B. Although written by Park, the singer's words resonate with the decade-old career of a former teen idol. It shows a certain progress into maturity, thinking about love and fame in a different light.

It was a smart choice for the lead single because the other tracks are utterly forgettable, recruiting the same old tricks by the same old in-house producers, like Teddy, Choi Pil-gang and Hahm Seung-cheon, among others.

K-Pop Leads Record Earnings from Cultural Exports

Korean pop culture generated record profits from overseas last year. According to statistics released by the Bank of Korea Monday, the industry earned US$794 million from exports of cultural and entertainment services last year, up 25 percent from $637 million in 2010.

This was the highest amount since statistics in the sector were compiled for the first time in 1980. A BOK official said the increase "is related to a surge in exports of cultural products amid the rising popularity of K-pop in Europe and the U.S. as well as in Asia".

The profits came from exports of films and TV programs overseas, from which the country earned nothing until 1996. It posted its first profits of $5 million in 1997.

Korea still faces a trade deficit in the sector because it spends more dollars importing foreign cultural products than it earns from exports. But the deficit is shrinking, amounting to $224 million last year, down 42 percent from 2010's $385 million.

Meanwhile, the construction services surplus reached a record $15.18 trillion last year, up 26.8 percent on-year, due to many overseas construction orders mainly in emerging markets. The domestic construction market by contrast dwindled by 5.6 percent.

Korea also earned $424 million from computer and information services and $4.32 billion from royalties on intellectual property rights, the highest amounts since statistics were first compiled in 1980.

Brown Eyed Girls' Miryo to make a solo debut

South Korean girl group, Brown Eyed Girls' member Miryo will make a debut as a solo, Nega Networks, the company which managers the girl group announced on Feb. 3, 2012. But, Miryo's title song "Dirty" did not pass the KBS review and was not allowed to be broadcast.

Nega said that there was a problem in the lyrics and that some of the words used (Cockeyed/squint) had a harmful meaning towards people with eye sight disabilities.

"We will adjust a part of the song's lyrics and Miryo will be back on stage to promote her track".

As for now though, Miryo will be promoting another track from her album, "Leggo' instead of 'Dirty' for all coming performances until the track is edited.

The Brown Eyed Girls, often abbreviated as B.E.G., is a South Korean girl group managed by Nega Network. The group consists of four members: Jea, Miryo, Narsha, and Gain. They've debuted as an R&B/ballad vocal group in 2006 and challenged themselves with different music genres.

Rising to popularity in 2008, with L.O.V.E. and retro dance music How Come, they went and completed their transition into a electronica/pop group with Abracadabra and Sign in 2009. The group made their debut in Japan in 2010 while the members worked on their solo activities in Korea.

After tow years and two months the group returned with Sixth Sense, breaking away from the synth-based and electronic music, it is considered as Korea's first rhapsody inspired soul hybrid.
